EHR Launch at SJHC

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Dec. 8, 2008) - When SSM St. Joseph Health Center, SSM St. Joseph Medical Park and SSM St. Joseph Health Center-Wentzville went live with the electronic health record at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, all SSM physician practices and hospitals in St. Charles County became part of an integrated electronic record network.

“Now all SSM physicians and hospitals in St. Charles County are linked together with a single EHR system,” said Dr.Richard Vaughn,  corporate vice president - clinical decision support. “That can reduce the time a physician or nurse spends searching for things like drug allergies or previous test results - allowing the clinicians to provide critical patient care faster.”

The launch marked SSMHC's fourth EHR rollout.

SSM St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis was the first SSM facility to launch, on March 30, with St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wis., and SSM St. Joseph Hospital of Kirkwood following.

"We're thrilled that this day has finally come," said Gaspare Calvaruso, president of the three St. Charles County facilities. "We've watched closely as the other facilities have 'gone live,' and have learned much from them.  We're working hard to improve the patient experience."

Calvaruso said he was impressed with the teamwork that went into the preparation, but was in awe of the sheer numbers involved for the Integrated Health Technologies staff:  24.62 miles of network cable; 3.6 miles of fiber for network redundancy; 640 new network data drops; 530 new network stations; 530 new 19-inch monitors; 425 new electrical power outlets; 420 workstations on wheels; 380 barcode readers for medication administration; 365 back-lit keyboards and skins to address infection control; 175 wireless access points; 135 new PCs; 71 new network Cisco switches; 36 new laptops; 30 washable keyboards for infection control; six new data closets; and one new permanent training room.
